Welcome to the Heidelberg SIAM & GAMM Student Chapter
The Heidelberg University SIAM & GAMM Student Chapter is part of two leading international organizations for applied mathematics:
- SIAM — Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
- GAMM — International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik e.V.)
Together, we form a local community of students and researchers interested in mathematics, its applications in science, engineering, and industry, and its role in solving real-world problems.
May 23, 2025: We successfully launched our new GAMM Student Chapter with a great kick-off event.
With this we updated the logo for our chapter!
- July 18, 2025: Workshop — Introductory Course on Implicitly Switched ODEs

About SIAM and GAMM
SIAM is an international society with over 14,000 members worldwide, including individuals from academia, industry, research institutes, government, and consulting. Since its founding in 1952, SIAM’s mission has been to:
- Advance the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society
- Promote research that develops new mathematical and computational methods
- Foster exchange of ideas between mathematicians, engineers, and scientists
GAMM, founded in 1922, is one of the leading associations for applied mathematics and mechanics in Europe, with a strong emphasis on bridging theoretical developments and practical applications. GAMM fosters scientific exchange, supports young researchers, and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.
About Our Student Chapter and what we do
The Heidelberg SIAM Student Chapter was founded in 2012 and has since grown into an active and welcoming community of master's students and PhD candidates from various disciplines, including:
- Applied Mathematics
- Scientific Computing
- Computer Science
- Mechanics
- Physics
- Data Science
- and related fields
In 2025, we became an officially recognized GAMM Student Chapter, expanding our network and opportunities for collaboration even further.
Throughout the year, we organize a variety of activities, such as:
- Industry Talks: Inviting speakers from companies like Google, Bosch, ABB, Sanofi, and others
- Field Trips: Visits to research centers and companies to see applied mathematics in action
- Workshops and Tools Seminars: Practical sessions on useful methods, software, and techniques
- Science Slams: Fun and informal events to present research in an engaging way
- Networking Events and Get-Togethers
- Special Events: e.g. Insights from Alumni in Industry 2025 & GAMM Student Chapter Kick-Off
